I went and helped someone with computer troubles after work today. It is a cash in hand job I do every now and then and I really enjoy it. It tends to not be particularly difficult, it's always a nice ego boost and I enjoy the conversations. However, like many IT people, at home I am often asked to help out with computer troubles, and yet the situation is not quite the same, there isn't the same level of care and making sure they understand that I would perform when asked to do it as one of these jobs, and there isn't the same level of attention paid to the solution by my parents as by one of my customers. I got to thinking as why this is on my way home and I can't help but think that this does simply come down to money and convenience. My parents and youngest brother know that if it comes down to it, they can just ask me to perform the task again. It doesn't cost them anything but a little inconvenience, and in my case I'm not being compensated, but I do get onto it quickly, the sooner it is done I can get back to what I was doing before and I know they aren't going to pay that much attention to it. On the other hand when I am doing one of these computer jobs, the person knows that afterwards they will have to pay me, and if something goes wrong, they'll have to contact me (or someone else I guess) and organise another visit to do the same task, whereas if they pay attention, take notes, etc, they can avoid this issue when it next crops up rather than coping with a delay of a few days and an extra expense. It is always interesting to see how situations change when money becomes involved. Tags: computers, money

Today I didn't get up to too much special, I got to work an hour earlier than my normal time and worked all day on an audit that is now very close to completion.
I did then head off earlier than normal. I started Picross DS on the bus to work, and that is an effective and addictive puzzle game, though it seems I do rely a little to much from the occasional feedback from a mistake.
I also noted that GTA IV PC had an update released that finally fixed one of the stupidest issues I had with the game, it refused to use mouse 4 and 5, and failed to allow you to remap all of the controls. Finally though I can set up the controls following the liens which I expect and don't run into either braking whenever I aim whilst driving, or being unable to zoom with a sniper rifle. That said, the game still is GTAIV, which means it is fun in short bursts, but has a sadly irritating mission structure.
Parents and youngest brother arrive home tomorrow from HK, we spent a bit of time putting on a load of washing and performing various necessary chores to make sure the house is presentable before they get back.
I realise thi issue is very fragmented, I blame this on tiredness, hopefully I will think more about this before posting tomorrow. Good night.

In the intent to more regularly post content to the net, I'm going to try this 8 days of happiness meme. Basically posting each day about what has made me happy. Today it was spending time with friends. Instead of the usual movies at Sam, Kurt & Jimmy's which was sadly cancelled at the last minute without telling me, we went out to Sunflower's which is a crepes place off of broadway which I used to go to almost every wee whilst I was at Uni. It really has not changed at all. After that we headed back to Sam, Kurt and Jimmy's place and watched an episode of Scrubs, Firefly and Soul Music. Also, I got the last of the 13 endings for Chrono Trigger today, so I am willing to move onto another DS game. I'm currently thinking Picross. On a minor note of regret, I do wish I had decided to take my laptop with me today. I had a really great weekend. I had friends around for a LAN on Friday, Saturday and a small portion of Monday. The attendance was half that of my birthday but we managed to get a fair amount of gaming and goofing around in that period, thanks to everyone who could make it and sorry to those who could not due to other commitments. For those curious about the set up, I took a few pictures before people arrived on Friday. The main room (the garage), the tabletop games room (the room under the house) and the console lounge (living room). My parents are away with my youngest brother until thursday, so I have moved the 360 downstairs and plugged it into the main TV, and as a result I've had a chance to test out Media Centre Extender on the TV more extensively and it really is fantastic to just be able to use a remote and watch stuff from my computer on a nice TV without all the futzing about. If only this was a situation that could be sustained, but wednesday night, the 360 will return to my room. Went to a picnic in the botanic gardens with uni friends on Friday since the LAN wrapped up in the morning it was good to catch up with them since I don't see that group of friends very often these days. There were logistical issues to start with since the botanical gardens was the extent of the location provided and I forgot my phone. Fortunately a stranger was kind enough to lend me his phone for a quick phone call and I do indeed have my address book replicated to my iPod. My brother's girlfriend has been over most nights since my parents went away which has benefitted me greatly in that she has decided to cook dinner so instead of having simple and rather plain meals for diner (like a bowl of wheat bix for instance) which tend to be what I eat when parents are away, we have been eating a little better than normal. Stee also held a BBQ tonight, so I got a BBQ dinner too. His friends are pretty cool though consume a lot more alcohol than mine tend to. A few of them are pretty heavy gamers though and have been playing Smash Bros Brawl for a chunk of the night, though there has also been a bit of Mario Kart 64 and Wario Ware Smooth moves, which are also great party games. Speaking of which, I now have my Wii back so I should put my friends code up later this week. One of his friends asked me about my manga collection as she has relatively recently started reading manga, had been told about my collection and wanted to get some ideas as to what some good series to read would be. She does quite like shoujo series, which seems reasonable and was especially interested in shoujo harem series once they were explained to her, so I gave her a few recommendations based on what I have read. It was rather neat to be talking about these kinds of series to someone to whom all of these things were new and shiny. I also bought the recent Macheist 3 bundle, which included, if you participated in a little twitter spam upon purchase, Delicious Library 2, and as a result have started to catalogue my manga and novel collection. I am currently working out an applescript to import from sources other than freaking amazon since their plugin stuff seems to actually be non-existant. You can find my partially catalogued manga and book library here. Tags: lan, meme, party Current Music: Dr Karl on triplej -

Comment to this post and I will give you 5 subjects/things I associate you with. Then post this in your LJ and elaborate on the subjects given. Also, make sure you specify in your comment that you want subjects for the meme. Here are the topics nescienx gave me, complete with her comments on em: 1. Your Mac. I've always remembered your macbook(?) in the uni days! You seemed to carry it everywhere. 2. Candies. You've always had a supply of candies, one particular type you no longer bring to lectures. It was Dino gummy of some sort. XD 3. Discworld. You talked about it a fair bit back then. 4. Ranma fics. 5. HAIRCUTS. I don't know why this stuck with me, but I'm fascinated by your... periodic hair cuts given by someone who... I don't know. Drive around? ( meme )Most of this post was typed on my phone, but I did a bit of cleaning up and formatting before posting. Tags: memes Current Location: home Current Music: Floss Weekly 61: Arduino

I'm going to try to knock over the rest of arrch's subjects, because nescienx gave me another 5 to do. BeardsAs I tell people who have asked, the reason why I have a beard is very simple, shaving is too much work. A beard needs little maintenance that I don't already perform, it needs to be washed and it needs to be trimmed occasionally. I wash my hair every time I shower, and I typically get a hair cut every 6 weeks. Currently I really need to trim it actually because I missed my last haircut, and subsequently and the hairiest I have ever been. Normally I can tell that it is nearly haircut time when my fringe starts entering the top of my vision at times, just recently my sideburns have occasionally started entering into my peripheral vision, which is a new experience. For reference I last shaved in November 2007, for Movember. and it is not an experience worth repeating, the blondest hair on my head is the hair on my upper lip, which means I need a lot of time to grow a noticeable mustache. kind of makes it hard to get donations. Also the worst part of growing a beard is the itchy stage that happens relatively early into the process, but after a while it goes away and then you are left with convenience! All things DoomDoom is one of my all time favourite games, Doom 2 even more so. I have Doom on my desktop, I have it on my laptop, my DS (well I have the GBA version), even on my 360. It is simple, basic fun, but it also doesnt really take itself seriously. It for me is one of those games that every so often I will go back to and play again. With a keyboard and mouse (i.e. in a decent source port) my favourite pastime was to play the super-secret level on Ultra-hard, and take on the cyber-demon with only the super-shotgun. I managed to get it down to 22 shots. I'm not really sure what else I can say about this, Doom is a classic first person shooter, one of the few that I can even play on a console. Consoles vs PCsMy family is not very big on living room gaming. One of the reasons why I don't really watch TV is that Dad has the run of the primary TV in the house in most circumstances, so he'd never consent to having a console set up and stay set up on the TV. So as a result consoles are set up in in the rumpus room, where I'd pretty much never play it. Mostly because when I decide to play a game I wouldn't think to go downstairs. More recently though, with the Wii and the 360, I have been able to set them up with my desktop monitors. I am fairly clearly biased toward the PC side of gaming, it is where I have spent most of my gaming time, I grew up with PCs rather than consoles, and most of the time, if I want to play a game I will play it on PC, especially since I get skills transfer that way in most cases. It is a great platform for independent developers and I really love services like Steam and Good Old Games. Where I can be pretty sure that I can indeed play that game that was released 16 years ago without having to pay more money. That all said, I do enjoy a bit of console gaming, the games are more expensive, but I bought a 360 late last year and have finished a few games on it now. Currently I am really enjoying Crackdown, which is probably most simply described as a GTA as a super-cop style of game. So I am having a heck of a fun time jumping from rooftop to rooftop, picking up cars and throwing them at criminals, shooting and criminals, blowing up criminals and collecting orbs and xp to increase my stats. It's a game that probably plays better on the console, but more to the point, it is a game that has only been released on a console, which is sadly increasingly common these days. This photo: This photo was taken on Staton Island, in the ferry terminal, whilst arrch, Paul and I were waiting for the ferry so we could head back. We were hungry and at a nearby "coffee" (they proudly sold starbuck brand coffee) place I noticed ice creams, which seemed less common in the US than here, though maybe I was not looking too much for em. In this case the ice cream I picked was one that was an icecream sandwich with 2 cookies being the outside, it was tasty, and for some reason amusing, hence the photo. Here are the topics arrch gave me: PodcastsBeards All things Doom Consoles vs. PCs Finally, this photo: This post is about podcasts, the others will be covered in their own posts, as I get around to actually typing them out, otherwise this will just sit on my laptop forever. I enjoy listening to podcasts, they are like the cool bits of radio without all of those problems of only being on during certain times, and constantly being interrupted by music. I currently have about 90 feeds in iTunes, though I at least a dozen of those are never going to update again. I listen to podcasts about gaming, both electronic and non-electronic, from the player aspect as well as the industry aspect. I listen to some audio fiction, both short stories, and podcast based novels, I listen to shows about the latest science fiction TV, fancasts about specific series like Farscape and Firefly and movie news technology news, science news, science radio shows, comedy shows, comedy web video series, a few TV shows and radio shows that are being podcasted. It is due to podcasts that I can follow conversations played back at double speed and still understand then, even occasionally slightly faster than that. Some podcasts I've been particularly enjoying are: Second Shift - A fantasy audio drama 2d6 Feet in a Random Direction - Gaming Industry podcast Gaming Uncensored - A very long, not well informed video game show that still entertains me somehow. This Week in Tech - A great round table weekly tech news show Good Game - ABC's video game review show Yu Gi Oh The Abridged Series Slice of Sci-Fi - Current Sci-fi news and discussion Tags: memes Current Location: Home Current Mood: tired Current Music: Red Panda Aventures (43) - The Golden Idol - Decoder Ring Theatre
